SimCity was released on Windows from March 6 to March 8 2013. It uses a modified Spore engine, using RenderWare as a backend for drawing, and a custom engine called GlassBox for city simulation. It uses Javascript as a scripting language. The servers run on Amazon S3, and are still running today. The game is most famous for its disastrous launch, as it required a stable connection to the servers, which were only load tested to a fraction of the player base at launch. The last update posted to the SimCity blog was on August 5th, 2014, titled "THE SIMCITY FREE TRIAL IS NOW AVAILABLE." This game directly led to EA closing Maxis's primary location in Emeryville, California, on March 4, 2015.

That feeling when Hydrogen hits.

I think this game would have functioned very well as a fun, casual city builder if it wasn't for the forced connectivity thing. The cities were made small so you couldn't produce everything in one city and you were supposed to "co-operate" with your region. Not only this looked very ugly since there was nothing in between the perfectly square cities, swithing from one to another was just clunky and and consumed tons of time due to the loading times. What ended up happening was you'd built your "main city" and then just fill the rest of the map with ugly "support cities" that just pumped everything to your main city. They tried to innovate but they didn't think it through. But I miss games like this, I find Cities Skylines too complex, it feels more like a job when everything revolves around designing good traffic connections. Sure it's a better city simulator, but it's just not for me. SimCity just had that fun, quirky charm that I miss the most when I sometimes play Skylines.

SimCity was an okay game. Compared to Cities Skylines, it wasn't as good. But, oh boy, the soundtrack is excellent, and I still listen to it to this day since its release. If any of you know of any albums with a similar type of music, please let me know. I would be happy to listen to them!
